Consider the following three incidents:

1. Massey Coal Mine explosion kills 29 on April 5th, 2010.  Not to mention the Chinese incident.
2. Iceland Volcano eruption in mid April.  Think geothermal.
3. Gulf of Mexico Oil Rig explosion, 11 missing on April 22nd.

Now we just need a solar flare and a few tornados and I think that will cover it.

This is my favorite THEMIS image. They are most likely lava tubes on the slopes of Ascraeus Mons.
